An Associate professor, department of urban and regional planning of the University of Lagos, Dr. Taibat Lawanson says over 50% of Nigerians live in slums. He also adds that only 20% of Nigerians have the capacity of owning a house in the country.

Lawanson made this revelation at the 3-day conference, ‘Largest construction exhibition’, organized by the ‘Big Five Construct Nigeria’, an influential and renowned portfolio of construction industry events.

At the event, held at the Landmark event Center, Victoria Island, Lagos, the academic Don states that acquiring house in the country is an upheaval task, noting that over 50% of the country’s population still live in slums.

She however highlighted Public Private Partnership on house constructions, mega developmental housing projects and reduction of interests on housing loans as solutions to the housing deficit in the country.

Speaking on the consistent building collapse in the country, a senior architect, Taiwo Aiyepe, disclose that building collapse is a national embarrassment, adding that one out of every building collapse happens within Lagos Island and about 25% is due to dense population. Aiyepe underlines incompetency and mediocrity among practitioners, failure of coordination and procurement, foundation failure and lack of technical skills as causes of the menace.

He therefore advise that practitioners stick to professional competency and stop manipulation of designs.

CobraReview reports that the event was geared towards creating awareness on the challenges and opportunities of investment in Nigerian housing market.

The construction show, according to its organizers is aimed at generating new leads to building business, by bringing together stakeholders from different sectors to share ideas and spot opportunities in the building sector.
