According to the latest data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), telecoms giant, MTN Nigeria, lost a whopping 667,245 mobile subscribers in just a single month.

The data reveals that MTN’s total subscribers stood at 52,269,270 in July 2019 while the number dropped to 51,602,025 in August.

CobraReview recalls this is the second time MTN Nigeria would lose mobile subscribers in about a year.

The NCC report shows the five major telecommunications company in the country which include Airtel, 9mobile, Globacom, MTN and Visafone. As at the end of August 2019, the total internet subscribers dropped to 122.5 million, from 122.6 million internet subscribers recorded in July. This means the total internet subscribers dropped by less than 100,000.

However, despite the drop in internet subscribers, MTN remains the network with the highest subscribers with 42% of the total market share.

On the other hand, Airtel Nigeria maintains a position as the internet provider with the second-largest subscribers estimated at 32.7 million or 27% of total industry subscribers.

Globacom becomes the highest gainer in August 2019 as it increased its mobile subscribers’ base by 397, 231.  The network had 29,124,366 mobile subscribers in July but increased to 29,521,597 in August.

Airtel followed closely gaining 350,134 subscribers in August. 9mobile has however continued to lose subscribers in the past 2 years. In August 2019, 9mobile lost another 176,575 mobile subscribers, according to the NCC report.
