Is Ikeja Electric stepping up its consumer information systems?

The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has notified residence of Iju area of Lagos of temporary power outage. CobraReview learnt the notification message was sent via text messages to mobile phone users in the area this afternoon. According to the distributor, the outage is due to maintenance work being carried out on the 33KV Feeder supplying the vicinity. Therefore, from 11:30am to 2:30pm supply would be interrupted.

Areas such as Elliot, Ishaga, Balogun, Toyin, Obawole, Rotimi Williams Estate and many others will be  without electricity until sometimes into the afternoon.

The way the distributor is going about this maintenance is commendable. It does seem public utility companies are gradually moving away from autocratic approach to rendering services. That is a good one. Public-private initiatives are embracing true customer service and upholding the popular business aphrodism that “the customer is king”.

Whereas utility firms in Nigeria are known to be brash and annoyingly unconcerned with the feelings of those they are employed to serve, the entrance of private distributors in the power sector does show that new ways of rendering public  service is in the offing. We wait to see more of this approach going forward – not just when maintenance is about to be carried out but anytime power interruption is imminent.
