Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as Diabetes, is a metabolic disease that is associated with high or irregular blood sugar levels. Some foods have been produced or introduced into the market in the bid to manage the disease and increase the life span of diabetics,  One of these foods is ELKRIS Super oat swallow.

This food is manufactured by Elkris Bio Health Food Limited; makers of highly nutritious alternatives to garri, pounded yam and fufu.

The company’s products contain ingredients which they claim have been scientifically proven to regulate cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Elkris Super Oat swallow is celebrated as being gluten-free, as well as having a beta-glucan ingredient that blocks saturated fat, otherwise known as ‘cholesterol’ from entering into the bloodstream.

Nigeria has the highest number of people with diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimate of 3.9 million people. We contacted some people living with diabetes who eat the Elkris Super oat and they had this to say:

Mrs. Mercy Ayodele says “I love the product, it is smooth and digests quickly. Although after a few hours of eating the oat I get hungry again but I am happy because it doesn’t add sugar to my body but rather reduces it.”

Mrs. Ebere Nkwocha says “this oatmeal is superb and very good for the body. It is easy to make and enjoyable and ever since I started eating it I have noticed the effect and my doctor is happy with my health improvement.”

Mr. Charles says “I eat this product like every other day, very often because I enjoy it but, it is not easy to cough out the money but, what will I do? I was eating rubbish until I fell sick and now I must eat healthy.”

Although good reviews were given about this product, some people who wish to continue eating this product can’t afford to, because of cost. The price of the 1.3kg size is about N1,600 and the average consumers find it quite expensive to purchase.

Mr. Wale who earns N35,000 per month says he will have to spend an estimate of N6,400 per month on the product given that he finishes a 1.3kg pack in a week and he has other expenses to cater to.

With diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does make. Unregulated/untreated high blood sugar can damage the nerves, eyes, kidneys and other organs, thus, products that can help diabetic patients should be made available and affordable.
