In a world where success is equated to fame and publicity, people can pull all sorts of stunts – odd acts, dressing, speech – just to be noticed, or get popular. many believe there is no such thing as ‘Bad Publicity’, little wonder reality shows, like BBNaija, get such a huge following.
From politics to sports, business, entertainment, and even media, we’ve seen people in different areas rise to stardom via controversy.
Social media (especially Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) is an avenue through which many announce themselves to the world, but another viable means of getting famous in Nigeria is through the BB Naija TV Reality Show.
Over the years, the show has directly or indirectly turned some into millionaires, while also helping many others attain the superstar status, through their controversial times in the house.
We look at 3 BBNaija Ex-Housemates whose controversy worked wonders for them.
Known to be very controversial on Instagram, even before she joined the Big Brother house, Anita Natacha Akide, popularly called ‘Tacha’ or ‘Symply Tacha’ is a Nigerian Instagram star, makeup artist, vlogger, businesswoman and one of the most talked-about BBNaija housemates on the Nigerian internet space.
Although she describes herself as someone who is spontaneous, loud, interesting, lively and fun, her actions in the Big Brother house often portrayed her as saucy, proud and pained. Tacha’s flair for nagging and fighting with other housemates further corroborates this. Some viewers even described her as uncultured and unguarded.
Amidst all the shades thrown her way in the house, and the way viewers see her, Tacha fans (Titans, as they liked to be called) were and are still solidly behind her. To the Titans, Tacha employed the right strategy, she played the game right, in fact, they even described her as the ‘Pepper of the House’.
Although the self-acclaimed ‘Port Harcourt first daughter’ was disqualified from the Big Brother Naija house after a brawl with Mercy Eke – a female housemate who later emerged winner of the show – her popularity outside the house leaves many people in awe, and others simply amazed.
With endorsements from House of Lunettes (Popular online eyewear brand) and GetFit (Top fitness equipment brand), coupled with almost a million Instagram followers and little above 90,000 followers on Twitter, the proponent of the ‘No Leave, No Transfer’ statement is now a brand to beat. She’s risen above all the smear campaigns against her and made herself a household brand. Tacha can thank her ‘die-hard’ fans; the Titans, for this.
Cynthia Nwadiora, a lawyer, worked as an outdoor advertising practitioner and was relatively unknown before going into the BBNaija house.
Cee-C was unarguably the most controversial housemate in the Big Brother ‘Double Wahala’ house. She even dubbed herself the ‘Double in the Wahala’. Cee-C was outspoken and didn’t care whose ox was gored as she made her views and opinions known, especially when picking issues with her fellow housemates.
Her brawl with fellow housemate, Tobi Bakre was quite legendary and this earned her foes and friends alike from across Africa.
Although, Cee-C came in second place, losing to Miracle Igbokwe, her popularity outside the house is what Miracle would pay to have now.
Today, with 1.8million followers on Instagram, and over hundred thousand on Twitter, Cee-C has become a fashion influencer, award-winning brand influencer and has worked with brands like Nairabet, Amstel Malta, Delta Soap, Huawei Mobile and House of Lunettes. She also launched her sportswear line, Cegar, which has so far been a major hit among her fan base. Hate her or love her, you cannot deny her presence in the social media influencer space.
According to reports, Cee-C charges an average of N500, 000 to advertise for brands on social media.
Popularly known as TBoss, Tokunbu Idowu was tagged the most controversial Big Brother Naija housemate and second runner-up of the Big Brother Naija season two (See Gobe). Tboss is hard to forget. She brought spark and dynamism to the show as she generated both love and hatred from across Africa. She has since got over 700, 000 followers on Instagram and close to 24,000 on Twitter.
She also caused a stir for her male fans by showing her breasts on live TV and picking a quarrel with almost everyone in the house.
Since she left the Big Brother Naija house, TBoss has hosted several shows including AFRIMA 2017 and Funny Bone Untamed.
The Edo State beauty has also signed ambassadorial deals with several brands, made her acting debut, and appeared in several movies and TV series such as ‘Ajoche’.
Believe it or not, TBoss seems to be one of the most commercially successful housemates of the Season 2 Big Brother Naija show.
Who says controversy doesn’t sell?
Tacha, Cee-C, and TBoss are testaments to the saying that “There is no bad publicity”, their contrioversial ways got our attention, and is currently helping to sell their brand.
